Animal Shelter Euthanizes Dogs After Distemper Outbreak

A Texas animal shelter said 75 percent of its dogs have been euthanized after a deadly virus outbreak.

The Humane Society of New Braunfels director said Tuesday the dogs were infected with distemper. The virus attacks the respiratory and central nervous systems of animals.

Officials have not released the exact number of dogs that died over the weekend.

The director said the virus came from a dog whose owner refused a veterinarian's advice to euthanize the animal. She said the dog was later brought to the shelter as a stray.

The director said the remaining animals have tested negative for the disease and have been moved outside. The dogs will be available for adoption after a 30-day quarantine period.

She said the shelter will review its intake procedures.
