1 Killed in Plane Crash Near Austin Airport

FAA records list a Dallas man as the owner of the plane

A twin-engine plane crashed while trying to land Wednesday afternoon at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, killing one man.

The Piper Aerostar aircraft went down north of the airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford said.

The privately owned plane crashed in a field, igniting a three-acre brush fire that drew a broad response from emergency personnel, authorities said. The crash site was located a short distance from a fire station, so the fire was quickly brought under control.

Only the pilot was on board, and he gave no signs of distress before the crash, authorities said.

FAA records list a Dallas man as the owner of the plane. Austin police did not identify the man Wednesday afternoon.

An airport spokesman said flights at Austin-Bergstrom were not affected by the wreck.

The FAA is investigating the matter.
