Thursday and Friday classes have been canceled at Alvarado ISD after a person in the community was told to self-quarantine after being exposed to the coronavirus.
An individual in the Alvarado Elementary North community has been told to self-quarantine because of exposure to COVID-19 at a doctor's office where they are employed, the district said in a Facebook post.
The district first announced Wednesday that classes would resume on Thursday. Based on new information received later in the day, members of the quarantined individual's household who are AISD students have become symptomatic of COVID-19.
"Because of the late notification we have been unable to verify what kind of contact was made in the doctor’s office so at this time, in an abundance of caution, we have decided to cancel school Wednesday," the post said. "This will allow our personnel to gather more information about the severity of the exposure and make a more educated decision about the rest of the week."
"Again, this is out of an abundance of caution. There has not been a confirmed case, only exposure by an employee of a doctor's office."
Leah Miller woke up to an automated call this morning and then had to explain to her kids why she had been so strict about hand washing lately.
“When we first started hearing about it we started drilling into them: Hand washing, covering your face, things like that. We have them wash their hands as soon as they get home have them spray everything down a little bit more,” said Miller.

The girls said their teachers have been strict as well lately and they are grateful to get back to class to give their teacher a hug before spring break next week.
How to Avoid COVID-19 Infection:
The best way to prevent infection is to take precautions to avoid exposure to this virus, which are similar to the precautions you take to avoid the flu. CDC always recommends these everyday actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
