A group of Denton veterans are already celebrating Memorial Day.
The American Legion Post No. 71 in Denton is creating a field of honor for our troops, and flags are being put up for our military men and women.
"It [the American flag] is beautiful, but it's more than that, much more," said Charlie Cole, a Korean War veteran. "It's a sign that we know what freedom is and we wish to share it with everyone."
Soon, hundreds of American flags will fly on a Denton hilltop in celebration of a life. Five flags are dedicated to Cole and his four brothers, who all served.
"I will remember what great Americans they were, how they loved the country and just how ... we would do it again," Cole said.
World War II veteran Bennie Snider purchased three flags to remember his former shipmates.
"They were some of my best friends," he said.

Perry Patrick, the director of the American Legion Riders and incoming post commander, is in charge of the field and has spent several days preparing the land for the flags.
"Now, it's the public saying, 'I get to honor my grandfather. I get to honor my husband. I get to honor my son,'" he said. "It comes to a time like this when we can basically stop, take a breath and realize all of our heroes."
