Trina Turk has officially opened its doors in Highland Park Village, recently throwing a big bash in honor of the occasion. The Los Angeles-based designer was in town for the event, and we were lucky enough to catch up with her to hear the latest on her Fall favorites and the Dallas destinations she loves.
NBCDFW: What pieces from your current collection are you wearing constantly now?
Turk: "The tweed jackets! And I'm also obsessed with our chunky gold 'Babylon' ring and the 'Love Story' cashmere wrap coat."
NBCDFW: Dallas girls are loving your home collection as well, what items would we spot at your abode?
Turk: "The residential pieces are so wonderfully colorful, and our patterned fabrics that we did in collaboration with Schumacher are everywhere in both my homes. I wanted for Trina Turk's home line to make it easy to dress up or change the feel of a room, and the colorful pillows and simple accessories are ideal for making small alterations instantly. And most of the fabrics we used to create the pieces are pulled from former apparel patterns for Trina Turk, which makes them really special and fun."
NBCDFW: Where do you draw your best inspiration as a designer?
Turk: "I adore vintage shopping, and I always feel inspired by what I find. Mid-century architecture and art also play a role in my creativity as well."
NBCDFW: What artists or designers do you admire?
Turk: "American sculptor Claire Falkenstein is one of the artists I love, and Wayne Thiebaud's work featuring the California coastline is also moving. Rudi Gernreich's work in the 60s and 70s is exceptional; he did some really advanced sportswear that was far beyond its time. And, of course, since my mother taught me to sew, I credit her with so much of my inspiration and aesthetic."
NBCDFW: What is your most memorable vintage find?
Turk: "There are so many! I'm currently most obsessed with my snakeskin, patchwork clutches by Carlos Falchi. I have colorful ones, but I truly love the tonal versions as well."
NBCDFW: Any favorite places in Dallas during your visits?
Turk: "The Nasher Sculpture Garden is my favorite spot in town!"
NBCDFW: What's next for your label, and what can we expect for Spring 2012?
Turk: "This season, we're debuting our new line of special occasion frocks that are really dressed-up and perfect for holiday. Our Spring line is all about the 'Country Club Coquette,' which represents prim and polished pieces with a ladylike feel, and conversely, the 'Mediterraneo,' collection, which is full of sexy, oceanic colors that were inspired by my Summer travels to Capri and Istanbul."
