Road Trip: Hippos From Los Angeles, Albuquerque Head to New Home at Dallas Zoo

Dallas is gearing up to get a couple of transplants from out West, but these two weigh thousands of pounds and will come by tractor-trailer.At the end of the month, Adhama the Nile hippo will be packing his things and moving to the Dallas Zoo's Simmons Hippo Outpost, which is scheduled to open in the spring. There he'll meet Boipelo, a 10-year-old female hippo from the Albuquerque BioPark. The 6-year-old male hippo has been at the Los Angeles Zoo since June 2013. The next year he was paired with Mara who gave birth to a baby hippo, Rosie, on Halloween 2014. The Los Angeles Zoo announced Adhama's departure Thursday and invited guests to go say farewell to the river horse."It has been great having Adhama here at the L.A. Zoo," said Josh Sisk, Curator of Mammals at the Los Angeles Zoo in a prepared statement. "He will be missed by all, but we are excited to send him off to the Dallas Zoo facility where he will be able to contribute to the sustainability of this species.
