A downtown Dallas landmark is celebrating its 50th birthday.The Fairmont Dallas Hotel opened in 1969, the same year Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon.Completing the 545-room hotel project was itself a milestone for Dallas.Originally planned as a mixed-use project with hotel rooms, apartments and retail, the development called Cary Plaza was one of the most ambitious Dallas real estate projects of that era.But the twin-tower development suffered a financial collapse before it was finished. The half-built towers sat on the city's skyline for more than four years.Finally San Francisco hotel magnate Benjamin Swig, chairman of the Fairmont Hotel Corp., took over the construction site and completed the project almost eight years after the groundbreaking.The Fairmont went on to be one of Dallas' most successful and best-loved hotels.Since 2011 the Ross Avenue hotel has been owned by a Florida-based lodging firm.To mark the Fairmont Dallas' golden anniversary the management is offering concessions for group meetings and weddings.
