They say every dog has its day but Labrador retrievers have a lot to wag their tails about these days.
The American Kennel Club said the breed is now in its 25th year as the top dog breed in the United States. It's the longest reign since the AKC started ranking canines in the 1880s.
And when it comes to Texas, the same is true. Labs are the top dogs in Dallas, Austin and Houston according to the AKC, but in San Antonio the bulldog is tops.
Beagles, bulldogs, golden retrievers and German shepherds round out the top five.
The rankings were based on registered dogs belonging to some 184 AKC-recognized breeds.
AKC officials say the list shows Americans prefer easy to care for, fun, family dogs.
