Baylor, TCU Campuses Vandalized

Police are investigating after two Texas college campuses were vandalized.

The Robert Griffin III statue was vandalized outside Baylor University's McLane Stadium in Waco.

The statue, which was dedicated in August 2014 to honor Griffin's 2011 Heisman Trophy win, is covered in purple spray paint, according to a university spokesperson.

Purple is the school color of TCU, which some consider to be Baylor's biggest football rival. The Baylor Bears are ranked number three in the national polls, while the TCU Horned Frogs are ranked higher at number two.

On Friday, TCU was also hit by vandals who wrote "61-58" on several surfaces on campus. The numbers refer to the score of last year's game between the two universities.

Baylor and TCU officials released joint statements regarding the vandalism:

"TCU and Baylor are both outstanding institutions and share a proud athletics history,” TCU director of Intercollegiate Athletics Chris Del Conte said. "Both campuses have recently been hit by acts of vandalism directed towards each other. These actions will not be tolerated. We are working closely with Baylor and public safety officials at both Universities on their investigations. We implore all those who are passionate about their school to respect each other and support their Universities in a positive manner."

β€œBaylor and TCU are two outstanding universities who have great respect for one another, academically and athletically, and it is most disappointing that the actions of a few cast a negative light on a rivalry that dates back more than a century,” Baylor Vice President and Director of Athletics Ian McCaw said. β€œPublic safety officials on both campuses are investigating these senseless acts of vandalism and unacceptable behavior.”

The Baylor Bears face off against the TCU Horned Frogs Nov. 27 at Amon Carter Stadium in Fort Worth.
