First Baptist Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress is standing behind Donald Trump's comments on abortion.
Jeffress is in Donald Trump's corner when it comes to comment he made earlier in the week. This was first reported by NBC 5's media partners at The Dallas Morning News.
Trump was asked about abortion during a town hall meeting on MSNBC. He said if abortion was banned, and a woman went ahead and got one, she should be punished. Trump did not specify the punishment.
Reaction was quick, with groups on both sides of the issue condemning the statement. Trump has since backed off from it, saying it is the physician who should be punished.
"Look, pro lifers who criticize that comment either are doing so because they really don't believe their rhetoric that abortion is murder, or they are so blinded by hatred for Donald Trump they are not able to think logically," said Jeffress.
Asked if he thinks a woman should be punished for getting an abortion, should abortion be outlawed at some point, Jeffress said the following.
"First of all, abortion will never be outlawed in this country. But if it is outlawed why would you have a law on the books and not enforce that? Of course, if it is outlawed a woman ought to bear some responsibility, some culpability for that. I think the majority of the punishment ought to be for the doctor," Jeffress said.
