The westbound lanes of North Loop 820 were closed for more than four hours Wednesday morning after a fatal crash involving a wrong-way driver in Fort Worth.
NBC 5 has learned the driver of an Isuzu Trooper was driving east in the westbound lanes of the highway when he crashed into a DK Haney roofing van west of Marine Creek Parkway at about 3 a.m.
Police said the wrong-way driver entered the highway at White Settlement Road and traveled nearly eight miles in the wrong direction, at a high speed, before colliding with the roofing van.
The roofing van flipped in the crash, pinning the critically injured driver. Rescuers from the Fort Worth Fire Department were able to free the man, who was then flown by air ambulance to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. The driver of the mid-size sport utility vehicle, whose name has not yet been released, was killed at the scene.
Two women were hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries after they crashed their Kia sedan into the wreckage from the first collision.
Westbound Loop 820 was closed near Marine Creek Parkway for more than four hours Wednesday morning as the crash was investigated and the scene cleared.
The roadway reopened to traffic at about 7:30 a.m.
