Police said a grandmother shot another grandmother in the neck during a custody exchange in the parking lot of a Dallas Wal-Mart Sunday night.
At about 5:30 p.m., Janice Brown and Carla Hawkins met in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart in the 7400 block of Samuell Boulevard to transfer custody of a child, according to Dallas Police Department Sgt. Warren Mitchell. They are the grandmothers of the child, police said.
Mitchell said the women began to argue during the meeting. The argument then led to a physical altercation before Brown pulled out a gun and shot the Hawkins, striking her in the neck.
A Fannin County police officer, who was working off-duty, responded to the parking lot. He saw Brown, 53, running from the scene with a gun in her hand.
Police said she shot at the officer across the parking lot and he shot back at her. No one was struck during the exchange.
Brown was then taken into custody and will be charged with aggravated assault on a public servant.
Police said Hawkins, 55, sustained non-life threatening injuries.
