Voters in some Texas counties may have noticed a delay in receiving new voter registration certificates.
New voter registration cards are usually sent out in December or January. However, on-going redistricting litigation caused a delay in the mailing of new cards.
All voter registration certificates expired on Dec. 31, 2011. Voter registrations, however, have not expired, only the registration cards have. Voters who have not moved or changed their names do not need to re-register. Anyone whose registration information is current will have their card automatically renewed.
A ruling issued by a federal judge required election officials to mail new voter registration cards by May 2, 2012.
Voters should receive their new cards in time to participate in local elections on May 12 and the Texas Primary on May 29.
