Visitors to the Texas City Dike at the mouth of Galveston Bay will have to dig twice as deep to get on the popular waterfront site this Fourth of July weekend.
The usual $5-per-vehicle weekend fee is being doubled to $10 for the first time.
Texas City Mayor Matt Doyle tells The Galveston County Daily News the extra money will cover rising costs of cleaning up the nearly 5-mile-long dike after the busy holiday weekend. The higher fee also will be imposed over Labor Day.
As many as 30,000 people are expected to visit the dike this weekend.
A fee was first implemented in September 2010 and typically has totaled more than $400,000 for the entire year. It's collected on weekends from March to October.
