District officials tell NBC 5 the fire was contained to a classroom in the second grade wing of Bransford Elementary School in the 600 Block of Glade Road in Colleyville.
The school will be closed Friday so crews can continue to clean and assess the damage.
The sprinkler system prevented the fire from spreading and extinguished it, according to Heather Willden with the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District.
The school was immediately evacuated, and students were put on school buses and taken to nearby Colleyville Middle School where parents were notified to pick them up early.
“My heart was racing, I was like 'My kids,'” said parent Naomi Stokes. “I’ve got two of them there and I had to calm myself by knowing that they’re prepared for this and they know how to keep our kids safe.”
Parents praised the district’s response.

“They practice fire drills, they really got to put those skills to the test today,” Willden said. “They were efficient, they were quick and calm.”
Colleyville spokeswoman Mona Gandy said firefighters received the call at 11:49 a.m. and it was declared a one-alarm fire at 11:56 a.m.
Firefighters from Colleyville, Hurst, Euless, Watauga, Keller, Southlake, North Richland Hills and Bedford responded. It’s the common response for a fire of this type in an occupied commercial building, according to Gandy.
The Colleyville Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
District officials say they will notify parents via phone and social media that school has been canceled on Friday.
