Marine Helps Rescue Dog From Afghanistan

Texas man helps fellow Marine bring Bolt to United States

A Texas man is raising money to bring a fellow Marine's four-legged friend to the United States from Afghanistan.

Carlos Plata, of Lubbock, served side by side with Shaun Duling for two deployments.

"We're Marines," Plata said. "We not only keep in contact with each other, but we take care of each other."

Duling befriended a stray named "Bolt" when he went back to Afghanistan for a third tour.

"He kind of took to me and, since I got there, everywhere I went, he was pretty much by my side or behind me," he said.

But the two were separated when his tour of duty ended.

"He just looked sad and confused, and I was just like, 'That can't be the last time I see him,'" Duling said.

With the help of Nowzad.com, a website that helps abandoned animals in Afghanistan, Plata and Duling have raised $4,000.

Bolt should be back by Duling's side in Virginia by Nov. 5.
