Texas Department of Public Safety officials said the man and his dog were heading east on westbound I-30 near Lamar Street just before 2 a.m. when he crashed his silver Mercury into an SUV carrying five teens.
Authorities said the driver of an 18-wheeler approaching the scene was unable to stop and crashed into the vehicles, causing the SUV to catch fire.
Three of the teens, 18-year-old Holly Novak, 19-year-old Dale Neibaur and 19-year-old Kyle Mathers, died in the crash. Two others, 18-year-old Hannah Galbraith and 19-year-old Kevin Dicicco, are being treated at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.
The group was traveling from their home in Virginia to Austin, DPS officials said. All of the teens were recent graduates of Herndon High School in Virginia.
The wrong-way driver of the Mercury, 78-year-old Kenneth Gordon Frazier of Royse City, and his dog were also killed in the crash.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
