A 25-year-old man is being held on $750,000 bond after being charged with his mother's murder.
According to police, Isabel Kristina Lopez was on the phone with an out-of-state friend when she was attacked and choked by her son on Saturday.
The mother’s family tells NBC 5, Isabel dealt with abuse at the hands of her son for years. They believe he does have some sort of mental issue and had threatened her in the past.
Lopez moved to Dallas County about a year ago, according to her family, from Florida, and that she worked at an organic food company.
Her neighbors said on Saturday night they did not hear anything coming from the apartment. One neighbor was shocked to hear of the murder.
“It breaks my heart. It breaks my heart, just unbelievable,” said Mary Chiles. “I can’t even picture the scene.”
The friend on the phone heard the woman struggle with her son, Gonzalo Lopez, and alerted local police. The caller also told police the man is known to have "violent tendencies."
