A large gas well fire in Denton County is out after emergency crews worked to contain it late Thursday night.
Crews arrived at the Vantage Energy gas well near Interstate 35 and West Windsor Drive at about 10 p.m. They tried to fight it, but decided to let it burn and prevent a natural gas leak.
"We were afraid it might blow up," nearby resident Roger Little said. "We jumped in our cars and grabbed what we needed, took both cars and got away."
There is no word on any injuries or what caused the fire, but severe thunderstorms with frequent lightning were moving through the area at the time.
No evacuations were necessary.
"We didn't know if something would happen to our house," neighbor Leah Strittmatter said. "Our neighbors evacuated just to be on the safe side."
