Houston Firefighter Cadet Collapses During Training, Dies

Officials say a 32-year-old Houston firefighter cadet has died after collapsing during a training exercise.

Steven Whitfield II was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon at a Houston hospital. An autopsy will be done.

Houston Fire Department Senior Capt. Ruy Lozano says Whitfield was in the last stage of the physically demanding exercise when he collapsed. Whitfield was in full gear when his personal alert device went off, while doing obstacles at a house-type structure set up for training.

Other firefighters started CPR but were unable to save Whitfield.

He joined the Houston Fire Department training program last October and was scheduled to graduate in June.

Temperatures topped the 80s Thursday afternoon in Houston.
