Firefighters in Trophy Club are battling a stubborn brush fire that has already consumed 300 acres of Army Corps property between highway 377 and Lake Grapevine Tuesday night.
The fast moving, growing grass fire is north of Chatswood Drive and King Lane. The fire, with flames as high as 30 feet, is in a green space adjacent to a heavily residential area east of Byron Nelson High School. Most of the flames, however, reached only a few feet in height.
“Challenges we’re facing right now is the accessibility to the fire itself, also the wind and the dry nature of the woods and everything back in there”, said Commander Lee Delk with the Trophy Club Fire Department.
More than 50 firefighters from at least 10 different departments are fighting the blaze, which started at about 3:30 p.m.
At times, the line of fire came within a few hundred yards of a new neighborhood of homes in Trophy Club’s Highlands development.
“We’ve been watching the smoke grow and it’s just been really scary” said Candace Angelo, who moved into a new home with her family just three days ago.
No evacuations have been necessary, but fire trucks were sent to watch over an older home closer to the flames, along with a gas well within sight of the rising smoke.

Firefighters raced to knock down the flames before the wind picked up in the evening, and brought in a bulldozer to help contain the fire.
“It's going to get worse as the temperature drops and the wind changes direction," said Delk. “So it’s going to get a lot worse, so we’re trying to get it out as quick as we can."
At this time, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to any property.
As of 10 p.m., the fire has been 80 percent contained.
