A Grapevine police officer escaped injury after his patrol vehicle caught fire Thursday morning.
The officer responded to a crash on the southbound ramp to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport near state Highway 121, according to Grapevine Police Department Spokesman Lt. Barry Bowling.
The officer parked his Chevy Tahoe patrol unit behind the vehicle in trouble. Shortly after he parked, he heard a loud pop from inside his SUV.
As the officer checked on a man involved in the crash, he noticed the rear interior of his vehicle was in flames. He called the fire department and additional police officers to close off the ramp.
Bowling said the officer attempted to remove his rifle and other equipment from the vehicle, but the flames were too intense.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
