Dallas firefighters quickly put out a fire in the basement of the former Statler Hilton Hotel Friday morning.
Dozens of firefighters could be seen in front of the hotel on Commerce Street, along with 14 construction workers who were evacuated from the building. No smoke or flames were visible from Chopper 5.
Initial reports indicated smoke was visible coming from the 4th floor, but fire officials said smoke had traveled through the duct work and that the fire was contained to the basement.
The 19-story hotel has been under an extensive $175 million renovation. The hotel sat abandoned for a decade before being targeted for new development.
Traffic along Commerce Street in front of the hotel is being diverted through downtown.
No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is not yet known. At this time there is no further confirmed information.
