One year after her husband's death, the pain is still unimaginable for the wife of a slain Dallas police officer.
Senior Cpl. Norman Smith was killed in the line of duty on Jan. 6, 2009. His wife, who is also a Dallas police officer, has filled their home with memories from their 18-year love story.
"I've endured a year of sadness, deep hurt and disappointment," Lt. Regina Smith said. "I don't have my best friend anymore."
She said friends have helped her cope.
"There have been a handful of friends that have been by my side, from the beginning to this day," she said.
Smith recently gave up a desk job at police headquarters to patrol the streets, which her husband enjoyed. She said it brings her comfort.
"I feel him more out in the street. It's almost like he's in charge. I feel his spirit more in the field," she said.
The pain of her husband's loss is still fresh.
"He was everything to me," she said. "It'll take me years to stop hurting and missing him. I'd just love to hear his voice."
