Denton Gets Special Edition Spider-Man Comic Cover

A comic book icon is about to meet with a Denton County icon.

On Wednesday, a special edition of the new Marvel Spider-Man comic will be released in downtown Denton with a customized cover image of the hero swinging over the Denton County Courthouse on the Square.

Tim Stoltzfus, owner of More Fun Comics and Games on the Square, was instrumental in the cover, wanting to give customers something special for the new, big issue of the comic that comes out this Wednesday.

The comic will be the first in a new, reboot of the Spider-Man character by Marvel that puts the hero into a whole new storyline.

When Stoltzfus heard about it, he reached out to friends in the comic industry to figure out how to get a specialized cover for his shop and his city.

They eventually put him in touch with Marvel and one of their artists Leinil Francis Yu inked the artwork with the help of pictures Stoltzfus sent in of the Square.

"The email came through with a pencil sketch and I actually like dropped my phone and stood up I was so excited,” said Stoltzfus. “I was like...'this is it.'"

Stoltzfus also got a Dr. Who comic variant made early this year featuring the Denton Courthouse.

It’s something he’d consider doing with other comics in the future as well, but only with characters ‘iconic enough’ to step into Denton’s ‘iconic’ Square, he said.

The special variant cover will be available only at More Fun starting Wednesday morning, but Stoltzfus says he’s already gotten orders for it online from around the world.

The store will also hold a party to celebrate the issue Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Square.
