The Dallas Police Department began "lock down" patrols Friday in the Cedar Springs/Oak Lawn area following a series of robberies and assaults.
Deputy chiefs and majors with the Dallas Police Department had a two-hour meeting about Oak Lawn crime Friday where they decided to implement the patrols Friday night.
A group of "roughly a half dozen" uniformed officers were assigned to the Cedar Springs/Oak Lawn area instead of patrolling a larger beat.
Lock-down patrols are rarely used, except in special circumstances, because officers are very limited in the calls they're supposed to respond to. These lock-down patrols are used in short bursts.
The latest assault victim, Geoffrey Hubbard, is characterized as attempted robbery, because although the suspect rummaged through his clothes and pockets, nothing was actually stolen.
Following the assault and attempted robbery, doctors said Hubbard may have a fractured skull and could be concussed.
Police said it's the 11th or 12th attempted robbery, robbery or assault in the Oak Lawn area since the beginning of September.
Dallas police will have another meeting at the end of next week to determine if they need to extend the lock-down patrols.
