Police said a man was driving at a high rate of speed when he crashed into a gas pipe and a sign in the 3300 block of Matlock Road at about midnight.

The driver was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in critical condition, according to authorities. A female passenger was also transported, but her condition was not released.

Authorities said the southbound lanes of Matlock Road were closed as fire emanated from the broken gas line.

Oncor cut power in the area briefly and cut two wires before restoring power.
