Witnesses told police two people were getting into their car after leaving the Benihana restaurant on the 7700 block of Banner Drive at about 10 p.m. when a man asked them for a lighter. The man then put a mask over his face and pulled a gun from his waistband.
One of the apparent robbery victims was able to reach inside his vehicle and grab his gun, police said. Both men then began shooting at each other in the parking lot.
The apparent robber, a 28-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was injured and transported to Medical City Dallas Hospital, where he later died, police said. The robbery victim, a 30-year-old man whose name has not been released, was also injured and taken to a different hospital in stable condition.
An unknown number of shots were fired in the parking lot, but no other injuries were reported. Dallas police investigators reported finding several shell casings near a white Chevrolet Camaro -- the exact number has not yet been disclosed.
Dallas police have not revealed any charges against the apparent robbery victim, but did say the case was being referred to the grand jury.
